Luen Wo Market, a market built by village communities in the northern New Territories in the 1950s, was once an important local market place which has witnessed the prosperity of Hong Kong’s local agriculture.
The urbanization of northern New Territories has transformed the landscape and mode of living in Fanling – from local agriculture with market place to new town development with shopping malls.
The pressure of rapid urbanization due to housing crisis has made Hong Kong’s rural culture more vulnerable.
An exhibition space, a farmer’s market, a restaurant with local food and weekend market will be the main program of this valuable heritage.
Through revitalizing Luen Wo Market, the project aims to reveal the history of Fanling and promote local food production by reconnecting the remaining local farmers and food producers to Hong Kong citizens.
