This project is part of the exhibition ‘Treesidence’ curated by Pointsman, funded and supported by the Hong Kong Conservancy Association in April 2024.
As architects and urban planners, we typically prioritize human needs. However, in the face of rapid urbanization and climate change, focusing solely on human needs is not a sustainable long-term approach. Through this research, we aim to reflect on the human-centered design philosophy and explore alternative perspectives.
This exhibition focuses on Nam Cheong Street in Sham Shui Po, aiming to investigate the close yet distant relationship between humans and other species within urban environments. By observing the artificial environments created by street spaces and facilities, we seek those incidental spots that can provide habitats for other organisms and consider how to construct an urban environment that can integrate all humans and species.
The exhibition will narrate 37 incredible, bizarre, and whimsical stories from South Cheung Street, which simultaneously showcase the diversity of nature, allowing the public to re-examine our urban environment from a non-human perspective. We hope to expand from a human-centered to a planet-centered approach, realizing the vision of a sustainable city.
Through this exhibition, we aim to raise public awareness about environmental protection and ecological balance, and inspire proactive thinking and actions toward creating an inclusive urban environment. We believe that only by establishing a reciprocal relationship and mutual respect between humans and other species can we achieve a sustainable future.
